The surrounding land is mixed agriculture with vineyards present in the nearby hill communes that form part of the Alto Piemonte wine area (Ghemme/Gattinara are in the same wine district to the north/northeast). The nearest towns of size are Borgomanero (local services, shops and a railway station) and the provincial capital Novara (regional rail connections, hospitals and larger services). The larger lakes of the area (Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore) lie to the west and are regional attractions beyond the immediate plain. Mountainous areas and ski facilities in the Monte Rosa/Sesia valleys lie further to the north and are reached by regional roads.
