This is the south-eastern tip of Sicily, with the limestone Hyblaean plateau cut by narrow valleys and quarries around Scicli. The Mediterranean coast is close, with the beaches and low cliffs of the Costa di Carro and Sampieri area within about 15 km, and the Irminio river mouth and coastal reserve to the west. Scicli itself has a large Baroque historic centre and is part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto UNESCO site. Modica, another substantial town with a major historic centre and services, is nearby. The area is known for Val di Noto Baroque architecture, dry-stone walls, carob and olive countryside, and for Montalbano filming locations.
