The historic centre includes "Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli", a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Porto Antico and the port-industrial zone are major transport and economic features. The area is known for maritime trade, shipbuilding, the historic harbour and the steep terraced slopes above the waterfront.
