The northern Apennines rise immediately around Castelnovo ne' Monti, with the Pietra di Bismantova rock massif at the edge of the town and the higher ridge of Monte Cusna and the crinale reggiano within the local mountain area. The Secchia valley and the Enza valley shape this part of the province, and the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano begins nearby on the main ridge. The nearest ski area is Cerreto Laghi on the Apennine pass, roughly 35 km away by mountain road. Castelnovo ne' Monti is the main service town of this part of the Reggio Apennines, with shops, schools and hospital facilities. The area is known for mountain pasture, chestnut country, Parmigiano Reggiano production in the Apennine zone, and for climbing and walking around Pietra di Bismantova.
