Pacentro sits on a hillside above the Peligna valley in the central Apennines. The Majella massif (part of the Apennines) lies within the local hinterland and Parco Nazionale della Majella is the regional protected area covering the nearby high ground. The landscape around the village is dominated by limestone mountains, steep valleys and upland pastures typical of the Majella area. The nearest town of size is Sulmona (regional service centre) which has shops and a railway station on the Rome–Pescara line and is known for its confetti (sugar-coated almonds). The wider area is known for mountain hiking, pastoral traditions and karst topography. The Adriatic coast and the city of Pescara lie to the east (coastline and airport are the nearest major transport/sea links).
