The cluster is in the upper Aterno valley under the Monti della Laga and close to the Gran Sasso massif. The Aterno river runs through this stretch of valley. The Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park is nearby and covers much of the surrounding mountain area. The nearest ski lifts are the small Campo Imperatore sector on Gran Sasso and the Terminillo side in Lazio, both roughly around an hour’s drive depending on the exact road and season. The nearest town of size is L’Aquila, which has the province’s main services, a substantial historic centre and major civic buildings. This part of inland Abruzzo is known for mountain pasture, forests and small stone villages tied to transhumance routes.
