The cluster sits in the Abruzzo foothills between the Gran Sasso massif to the west and the Adriatic plain to the east. The Fino valley and the rolling hill country around Penne are the immediate landscape, and Lago di Penne lies within this area. The Riserva Naturale Regionale Lago di Penne is here, around the lake and wetland. The nearest ski lifts are on the Gran Sasso side around Campo Imperatore and Monte Cristo, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road, so they are not part of the immediate landscape. Penne itself is the nearest substantial town, with a brick-built historic centre on a hill; Pescara is the main city for larger services on the coast. The area is known for olive groves, vineyards and cereal fields on the Abruzzo hills.
