Much of the surrounding mountain area falls in the Mont Avic Natural Park and the protected alpine zone around the Valchiusella headwaters. The nearest ski terrain is the small lift area at Palit above Gressoney, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road, with larger Monterosa systems farther on. The nearest sizeable town is Ivrea, which has full services, a railway station and the UNESCO-listed Olivetti industrial city. This part of the Canavese is known for hiking, climbing on the Traversella crags, chestnut woods and former iron-mining sites.
