The town sits in a high basin of the central Apennines; the Sirente and Velino massifs (including Monte Sirente) lie within roughly 15 km of the town. The Aterno river runs through the area and its valley structures local communications. The Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino occupies the surrounding hills and mountains. The nearest alpine ski areas are Campo Felice and Ovindoli, reached by roughly 25–40 km of road. L'Aquila is the provincial capital and local service centre, home to the University of L'Aquila, the Ospedale San Salvatore and provincial administrative offices, and it has a historic centre with churches and fortifications. The city and many nearby villages were heavily damaged in the 2009 earthquake; reconstruction and seismic works have been an important feature of the area since then. The surrounding plateaus and nearby localities (notably the Navelli area) are known for saffron cultivation and for pastoral activities and sheep farming.
