Castel del Monte: casa cielo terra

The cluster sits on the slopes of the Gran Sasso massif (Gran Sasso d'Italia), with high-altitude plateaus and peaks within about 15 km. The area lies inside or immediately adjacent to Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. The Campo Imperatore plateau and its ski area (Gran Sasso) are on the same massif; the Campo Imperatore slopes and lifts are the nearest winter-sports facilities (drive from Castel del Monte typically around 30–40 minutes on mountain roads, depending on conditions). Rocca Calascio and the castle ruins above Calascio are within roughly 10 km. Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a few kilometres away and is a member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The nearest larger town is L'Aquila, which provides provincial services, a university, a hospital and main train links (roughly 35–45 km by road). The zone is known for high-mountain pastures, shepherding/transhumance, hiking and a cluster of medieval hill villages.
