The cluster sits on the slopes of the Majella massif in the central Apennines. The Majella National Park covers the surrounding mountains and high valleys. The immediate landscape is typical high-Apennine: steep valleys, mountain streams and areas of beech and chestnut woodland. The nearest town of size is Sulmona (the local service centre) which has a train station on the Rome–Pescara line, hospital services, shops and a local confectionery industry famous for confetti (sugared almonds). The Alto Sangro ski area (Roccaraso, Rivisondoli) lies to the north and is reached by roughly a 30–40 km drive. The area is associated with mountain agriculture, shepherding/transhumance and hiking on marked trails in the Majella.
