The cluster lies on the western side of the Marsica, under the Monte Viglio and Monti Simbruini-Monte Marsicano sector of the central Apennines. The former bed of the Fucino is nearby, and the edge of the Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise National Park is close to the town; the park is one of Italy’s oldest protected areas and is known for beech forest, wolf and bear habitat. The nearest ski area is Ovindoli Monte Magnola, roughly an hour by road, so it is not part of the immediate landscape. Avezzano is the nearest town of size, with rail links, services and retail. This part of Abruzzo is known for the Fucino plain’s agriculture and for mountain villages on the park edge.
