The cluster sits in the Peligna valley with the Morrone massif immediately to the east and the Maiella massif within the same local landscape. The Aterno-Sagittario river system runs through the valley floor. The Maiella National Park begins nearby on the mountain side above the valley. The nearest town of size is Sulmona, which has a substantial historic centre, railway station and services. Pacentro, on the slope above the valley, is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The area is known for confetti sugared almonds around Sulmona and for mountain villages on the edges of the valley.
