Belluno sits at the southern edge of the Dolomites; steep limestone massifs rise immediately to the north of the town. The Piave river runs through the urban area. The Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park and its high-forest and alpine terrain lie a few kilometres to the north and west. The Nevegal plateau and its small ski area and lifts are a 10–20 minute drive from the town. Belluno is the provincial capital (population ~35,500) with a historic centre, shops and public services and a regional rail link toward Venice. The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage site; Dolomite massifs and mountain tourism (hiking, climbing, skiing), forestry and pastoral agriculture characterise the surroundings.
