Gela

Coastal plain on southern Sicily (the Piana di Gela) with the town sitting on the Mediterranean coast. The Gela river crosses the plain and reaches the sea at Gela. The Riserva Naturale Orientata “Biviere di Gela” (a protected wetland/lake important for migratory birds) lies close to the town at the river mouth. The coastal strip includes beaches and port facilities. Large industrial installations, including a petrochemical/refining complex and related power/industrial plants, occupy part of the shoreline and the harbour area. The ancient Greek colony of Gela is the site of archaeological remains and a local archaeological museum. No significant mountain range or ski area is within about 15 km.
