The coast at Scalea is close by, while the inland landscape quickly becomes wooded and broken by ravines and limestone hills. The nearest town of size is Scalea, which has rail access, beaches and the main services for this stretch of coast. The area is known for cedar cultivation on the coastal belt and for the Lao valley's outdoor sports, especially rafting upstream around Papasidero.
