The cluster sits in the Ligurian Apennines, in the upper Val Trebbia. The Trebbia river runs through the valley and shapes narrow gorges and rocky pools used for local recreation. The surrounding slopes are predominantly chestnut and beech woodland with small pasture and mixed-family farming. There are no ski lifts within about 15 km; winter alpine skiing requires a longer drive into the higher Apennines. Local services are provided by small valley communes and village centres; for hospitals, major shopping and transport connections residents use the regional capital, Genoa (airport, seaport, mainline rail), to the south. The area is known locally for chestnut production, mushroom and wild-food foraging, and hiking along valley trails.
