The cluster is in the Fontanabuona valley on the Ligurian Apennine side, with wooded ridges and mid-altitude mountains close by, including the Monte Caucaso area within about 15 km. The Lavagna river runs down the valley toward the coast. The nearest larger town is Chiavari on the Gulf of Tigullio, which has a full set of services, a railway station and a substantial historic centre. This part of eastern Liguria is known for slate quarrying and for valley villages set between the coast and the Apennine passes.
