The area around
Location score 86/100The island faces the Tyrrhenian Sea and within the local 15 km radius there is only sea, nearby islets and the island's coastline of granite cliffs, coves and sandy beaches. The island contains three principal settlements: Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello (a walled medieval village) and Campese. The interior is low, wooded hills with Mediterranean macchia and pine woodland. Isola del Giglio is part of the Parco Nazionale Arcipelago Toscano (Tuscan Archipelago National Park). There are no ski lifts; activities and the local economy centre on boating, sailing, diving and seasonal tourism, and on-island services are limited and concentrated in summer. The nearest mainland port and town of size is Porto Santo Stefano (Monte Argentario), which is the usual ferry connection and provides broader maritime and commercial services. The area is known internationally for the 2012 Costa Concordia shipwreck that occurred off the island and for diving and boating around the archipelago.
