Orbetello sits on a narrow strip of land in the Laguna di Orbetello, a coastal lagoon separated from the open Tyrrhenian by the Giannella and Feniglia tombolos. The Monte Argentario promontory (including the ports of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole) lies within about 15 km and has a rocky, indented coastline with small harbours and coves. The Laguna di Orbetello is a protected wetland (Riserva Naturale della Laguna di Orbetello) important for migratory birds. Long sandy beaches backed by coastal pine wood (La Feniglia and the Giannella spit) border the lagoon and physically connect Monte Argentario to the mainland. Ferries operate from Porto Santo Stefano to Isola del Giglio and Giannutri. The nearest provincial capital of size is Grosseto, about 30 km north, with a hospital, mainline train station and motorway links. The area is known for summer tourism, boating, fishing and birdwatching.
