Monte Argentario is a granite promontory on the Tuscan coast with small harbours including Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole on its shore. The Laguna di Orbetello (a coastal lagoon) lies between the promontory and the mainland and is separated from the sea by the two tomboli Giannella and Feniglia. The Feniglia tombolo is a long sandy spit backed by a Mediterranean pinewood; the Giannella is the northern sandbar. Regular ferries run from Porto Santo Stefano to Isola del Giglio and Giannutri; those islands are part of the Parco Nazionale Arcipelago Toscano (Tuscan Archipelago National Park). Orbetello (the nearest town of size) provides shops, restaurants and a railway station on the Tyrrhenian rail line; Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole are active fishing and ferry ports. The immediate surroundings include beaches, coastal cliffs and direct marine access, with agricultural land and tourist services on the nearby plain.
