Hills of the southern Maremma on tuff (tufo) geology typical of this part of inland Grosseto province. The thermal springs of Saturnia (Terme di Saturnia, with public springs and commercial spa facilities) lie within the municipal territory and are a local destination a few kilometres from the town. Montemerano, a medieval hill village with a compact historic centre, is a frazione of Manciano and close by. The surrounding landscape includes olive groves, vineyards and pasture on rolling hills. Etruscan-era archaeological sites and tuff-built towns are characteristic of this area of southern Maremma. There are no ski lifts within the local area; the coastal strip and the Parco Naturale della Maremma lie farther to the west beyond the immediate 15 km radius. Manciano is the communal seat and provides local shops, services and basic municipal facilities.
