The cluster is on the Ionian coast of the Salento peninsula. The sea is the defining feature here, with the Gulf of Taranto shoreline and the beaches and low rocky stretches around Gallipoli within the local landscape. The old town of Gallipoli stands on a limestone island linked to the mainland and has a port, seafront, churches and a built historic centre. To the north, the Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano Regional Park is within the local area, with pine woodland, coastal inlets and protected shoreline. This part of Salento is known for olive groves, dry-stone walls and summer beach tourism.
