Location score 85/100Mount Etna (active volcano, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is the major mountain feature and its lower and upper slopes fall within the local radius. The Alcantara River and the Gole dell'Alcantara (Alcantara Gorge) lie nearby and are managed as a protected fluvial area. The Ionian Sea coast, including the towns of Giardini Naxos and Taormina, is on the eastern side of the area. The Etna Regional Park (Parco dell'Etna) covers much of the volcanic slopes around the town. Ski facilities on Mount Etna (Piano Provenzana on the NE side and Rifugio Sapienza on the south side) serve the volcano; drives to those lifts from towns on the northern slopes are on the order of under two hours. Coastal towns such as Giarre and Riposto provide rail connections and basic services, while Taormina is the nearest major tourist centre. The surrounding slopes are used for vineyards (Etna DOC, including Nerello Mascalese), olives and other agriculture on volcanic soils.
