Pantelleria is a volcanic island with a compact, varied relief dominated by Montagna Grande; the landscape is formed by lava flows, calderas and rocky ridges. The island contains the crater lake Specchio di Venere, a small thermal/mineral lake with a beach and nearby thermal springs and fumaroles. The coastline is a mix of rocky cliffs, sea caves and small beaches and includes the main harbour at the island town of Pantelleria. The comune seat (Pantelleria town) has ferry connections to Sicily and a small airport with scheduled flights to the Italian mainland. Traditional dry-stone terraces and volcanic stone dwellings called dammusi are common in the agricultural landscape. Local agriculture is notable for caper cultivation and vineyards producing Passito di Pantelleria (zibibbo) wine. The island offers diving, coastal bathing and hiking; there are no ski facilities.
