Cagli sits in the central Apennines; the surrounding landscape is Apennine valleys and wooded hills. Monte Catria (1,702 m) lies within about 15 km to the south and is the main local mountain feature. The Burano river runs through the valley where the town sits. The Adriatic coast is to the east (coastal centres in the province include Fano and Pesaro). The local landscape is made up of beech and chestnut woodlands, pasture and mixed small-scale hill agriculture. Seasonal ski facilities and marked trails exist on Monte Catria and nearby ridges (local, small-scale ski terrain rather than large alpine resorts). Urbino (Renaissance hill town with a university and higher-level services) is the nearest larger inland centre, roughly 35–40 km away. The immediate area is typical Marche Apennine countryside with small mountain towns and forestry/agricultural activity; nearby municipalities include Cantiano and Frontone.
