The cluster lies on the Murge plateau, with open limestone countryside, cereal fields, pasture and patches of oak woodland in this part of inland Bari province. Alta Murgia National Park lies within reach of the area, and the landscape around Santeramo is part of the wider karst high plain of the Murge with sinkholes, rocky ground and dry-stone field boundaries. Matera is the nearest town of major size in daily use, with full services and the Sassi historic quarters. The area is known for Murgia grazing land, durum wheat country and meat production, especially the local cattle-breeding tradition.
