The area sits on the hills between the Maiella massif and the Adriatic, in a landscape of cultivated ridges, small valleys and scattered villages. The Foro and Alento river valleys are nearby, and the Adriatic coast around Francavilla al Mare and Ortona is within the local orbit. Maiella National Park begins inland, with the nearest access around Guardiagrele and the eastern foothills; the mountain is a constant presence from this part of Chieti province. The nearest larger town is Chieti, which has a substantial historic centre, services and Roman remains, and Pescara is the main city of the area for rail, airport and shopping. Bucchianico is known as the birthplace of San Camillo de Lellis.
