The Apuan Alps are within the local landscape, with steep limestone mountains around the upper Serchio valley. The area is close to the Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane. Lake Vagli is nearby, and the Edron and Serchio valleys shape the surroundings. The nearest ski area is Casone di Profecchia on the Apennine side, roughly an hour’s drive depending on road conditions. Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is the nearest main town, with shops, services and rail connections in the Serchio valley. This part of Garfagnana is known for mountain villages, chestnut country and access to both the Apuan and Apennine slopes.
