Località Vari, Pieve Torina

The cluster lies inside the Monti Sibillini, an Apennine sub-range with several summits above 2,400 m including Monte Vettore (2,476 m) within the local 15 km radius. Lago di Pilato, a small glacial lake beneath Monte Vettore, is in the same massif and reachable from the Visso area. The site falls within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini; Visso hosts one of the park's visitor centres/administrative offices. Mountain roads and marked trails lead from Visso up into the park; downhill skiing in the Sibillini uses small, local facilities on the massif and requires driving on mountain roads in winter. Visso was heavily damaged in the 2016–17 central Italy earthquakes and reconstruction work has affected the town and surrounding villages. Neighbouring larger towns outside the 15 km radius include Camerino and Norcia, which provide more extensive services. The area is part of Apennine mountain pastoral and mountain-agriculture territory, with chestnut woods, pastureland and small-scale local food production typical of the Sibillini.
