Within about 15 km are high Carnic peaks, including Monte Coglians (Monte Coglians, 2,780 m), the highest summit in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The local landscape is typical high-Alpine: steep valleys, mountain pastures, marked hiking routes and mountain refuges (rifugi). The main Alpine ridge and the Austrian border lie across the nearby high ground. The Carnic front from World War I crosses this sector and there are military positions, trenches and mountain war routes in the wider area. Nearest significant service town for shops, hospital and rail is Tolmezzo, approximately 25–30 km to the south. Winter sports in the area are oriented to small local slopes and cross-country routes, with larger downhill ski resorts in the Carnia reachable by a drive of tens of minutes. The wider Carnia area is known for mountain pastures, traditional alpine cheese production (Montasio in the broader area) and mountain-hiking culture.
