Lake Montepulciano lies just east of town, with reed beds and the Riserva Naturale Lago di Montepulciano. The nearest larger centres are Chiusi and Chianciano Terme, while Siena is the main city in the wider area. Montepulciano itself is a substantial historic hill town with Renaissance palaces and is known for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
