Monte Subasio rises nearby to the west, and the Apennines close the eastern side of the basin. The Topino river runs through Foligno. The Monte Subasio Regional Park is nearby on the Assisi-Spello side. The nearest ski area is Forca Canapine in the Sibillini sector, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by road depending on the route. Perugia is the nearest larger city, with university functions, major services and rail connections. Assisi, within the same valley, has UNESCO status for the Basilica and Franciscan sites. The area is known for the broad Umbrian plain, olive hills toward Spello and Assisi, and as a transport node between Perugia, Spoleto and the Valnerina.
