The Grand Combin massif dominates the views to the north, and the higher Pennine Alps are close across the upper valley. The Dora Baltea runs along the main valley floor below, and the Artanavaz stream drains the Valpelline side nearby. The area is close to the route of the Great St Bernard pass into Switzerland, with high mountain scenery throughout the 15 km radius. The nearest town of size is Aosta, which has the main services of the region and an extensive Roman and medieval historic centre. The area is known for alpine pasture, small stone villages and mountain agriculture; Valpelline nearby is known in particular for Fontina production. The nearest ski lifts are the small Crévacol area above Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses, roughly half an hour by road, and the larger Pila area above Aosta, also around half an hour depending on the exact hamlet.
