Low rolling foothills of the central Apennines surround the town and the surrounding countryside is largely agricultural, with vineyards, olive groves and arable fields on the slopes and valley floors. The Chienti river valley lies a few kilometres to the south. Within about 15 km are several hill towns: Recanati (birthplace of the poet Giacomo Leopardi, with the Leopardi House/museum), Montecassiano and Treia, each with historic town centres and local services. The town of Macerata contains the Sferisterio arena and an annual open‑air opera season. No national park or major alpine ski area lies within 15 km; the Monti Sibillini and Monti Sibillini National Park are farther inland.
