Modena lies on the flat Po plain with a surrounding landscape of agricultural fields and industrial estates. The Secchia River runs to the west of the city and the Panaro River to the south‑east (both part of the Po basin). The city centre contains the Romanesque Cathedral, the Torre della Ghirlandina and Piazza Grande, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is part of Emilia-Romagna’s 'Motor Valley': the Ferrari factory and museum in Maranello are within roughly 15 km and there are multiple sports‑car and engine workshops in and around Modena. The provincial countryside around Modena is a production area for traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena and for Lambrusco wine. Modena is served by the A1 autostrada and by regular rail connections; Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi airport is about 40 km away.
