Via dei Lucani, Matera

The cluster is in the built-up area of Matera, so the resident setting is urban rather than open countryside. Matera stands on the edge of a gravina, the deep limestone ravine cut by the Torrente Gravina, with the rocky Murgia plateau immediately opposite. The Parco della Murgia Materana lies just outside the city, with rupestrian churches, ravine scenery and Mediterranean scrub. The city is known for the Sassi di Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site of cave dwellings and rock-cut urban fabric. This part of Basilicata is known for limestone plateau landscapes, ravines and grain-growing countryside.
