The cluster sits on the shore of Lake Trasimeno, the large shallow lake with its islands (Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese) and several small ports and ferry services connecting shore and islands. Castiglione del Lago occupies a promontory into the lake and has a medieval walled centre with the Rocca (fortress) and an old harbour. The surrounding territory is a low lake plain with nearby low hills, agricultural land (olive groves, arable fields) and wetlands that attract waterbirds. Nearby small towns on the lake within about 15 km include Passignano sul Trasimeno, Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Magione and the hill town of Panicale. The provincial capital Perugia is the nearest city of size (roughly 40–50 km) with regional services, a university and an airport; larger Tuscan towns such as Cortona lie farther outside the 15 km radius. There are no high mountains or ski lifts within the immediate 15 km radius; the area is inland and lake-centred rather than coastal.
