Perugia is a hilltop regional capital in central Umbria with a medieval historic centre and visible Etruscan and later medieval/Renaissance remains. The city hosts the University of Perugia and the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria and is the site of the Umbria Jazz and Eurochocolate festivals. Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi – Umbria International Airport (PEG) lies about 12 km southeast of the city. The immediate surroundings are undulating Umbrian hill country—the foothills of the central Apennines—with agricultural land, olive groves and vineyards. Nearby towns within about 15 km include Deruta, known for its ceramics (maiolica), and Torgiano, known for wine production and the Museo del Vino. No sea or large lake lies within 15 km (Lake Trasimeno is roughly 20–25 km to the northwest). Nearest skiing is in the central Apennines and requires a drive of well over an hour. As the cluster sits inside the built-up area of Perugia, the living environment is urban/hilltown rather than remote countryside.
