The cluster sits in the Umbrian Apennines in the Valnerina valley. The Monti Sibillini (Sibillini Mountains) form the nearest mountain chain and their high ground is within roughly 15 km. The Nera river runs through Valnerina; the local landscape is a mix of steep valley slopes and upland pastures. Monti Sibillini National Park covers the higher ground of the Sibillini range that lies near this area. Mountain meadows (the Pian Grande/Castelluccio area) and upland villages used for summer grazing are a feature of the Sibillini massif nearby. Downhill-ski infrastructure in this part of the Sibillini is limited and seasonal; more substantial ski facilities are reached by a longer drive. The nearest well-known local town is Norcia (regional centre for pork curing, truffles and mountain-food products); larger provincial towns such as Spoleto and Terni lie further away. The area is known for high-altitude agriculture (lentils of Castelluccio), cured meats and mountain hiking.
