Lake Trasimeno lies immediately at the cluster: the lake itself and its islands (Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese, Isola Minore) are within a few kilometres. Parts of the lakeshore are included in the regional protected area around Lago Trasimeno (Parco del Lago Trasimeno). The lake is shallow and used for boating, sailing, fishing and ferry links between lakeside towns and the islands. Nearby lakeside towns within about 15 km include Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Magione and Castiglione del Lago, which provide local shops and services. The surrounding landscape is a low-lying lake basin of reedbeds, agricultural land and low hills rather than high mountains. There are no ski lifts within 15 km; Appennine ski areas require a drive of roughly an hour or more. Perugia, the provincial capital with hospitals, university services and regional transport links, lies around 30 km to the east.
