The cluster is in the Sibillini Mountains, with the Monti Sibillini massif immediately around Norcia and high limestone ridges enclosing the basin. The area is tied to the Sordo and Corno river system, with the upland plain of the Norcia basin and the Castelluccio plateau within the local mountain landscape. Much of the surrounding territory falls within Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. The nearest ski area is Forca Canapine above Norcia, reached by mountain road in roughly half an hour, though operations have varied after earthquake damage. Norcia is the nearest town of size and has a walled historic core, the basilica area of San Benedetto, shops and everyday services, although parts of the centre have been affected by the 2016 earthquakes and reconstruction. The area is known for black truffles, pork butchery and cured meats, and for the high plain of Castelluccio with its lentil fields.
