The cluster is in the Umbra Valley at the foot of the Apennines, with Monte Subasio to the west and the first ridges of the Valnerina and the Monti Martani within the surrounding landscape. The Topino and Menotre river system runs through this part of the plain. The Monte Subasio Regional Park begins a short distance west around Assisi and Spello. Foligno is a substantial town with a full service centre and a walled historic core, and Assisi, Spello, Bevagna and Montefalco are all nearby hill towns with preserved historic centres. Assisi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area is known for olive groves, wine hills around Montefalco, and the broad cultivated plain between the hill towns.
