The cluster is in the built-up area of Perugia, so the immediate setting is an urban hill city rather than open countryside. The city stands on a ridge above the Tiber valley and has an extensive historic centre with major medieval and Renaissance monuments, including the Palazzo dei Priori and the Fontana Maggiore. The Tiber valley lies nearby, and Lake Trasimeno is within about 15 km only from the western edge of the wider municipal territory, not from central Perugia. Assisi is the nearest major historic town of comparable importance in the area. Perugia is known for its university presence, its Etruscan and medieval fabric, and for chocolate production.
