The cluster is in the Pistoiese Apennines, with wooded mountain ridges and valleys around the upper courses of the Lima and other mountain streams. Much of the area falls within or against the Appennino Pistoiese landscape, and the Foreste del Teso and other chestnut and beech woods are a local feature. Abetone is the nearest ski area, with lifts around 15 km away by road. Cutigliano and San Marcello are the nearest small centres with everyday services, while Pistoia is the nearest larger town with a full historic centre, rail links and wider services. This part of the mountain belt is known for forest scenery, summer walking and winter skiing around Abetone.
