Viggianello

The cluster is in the Pollino massif, with Monte Pollino and Serra del Prete in the wider mountain area, and Rotonda is one of the Basilicata gateways to Pollino National Park. The Mercure river valley is nearby, and the Lao gorge system lies on the Calabria side within this mountain area. The nearest ski area is Piano Pedarreto near Viggianello, a short mountain drive away in season, with larger lifts farther off that do not affect the setting score. The nearest town of some size is Castrovillari, which provides the main services for this side of the massif. The area is known for high Apennine woods, beech and pine slopes, canyon rivers, and for red aubergines from Rotonda, which have PGI status.
