Monte Vulture rises immediately above the area, an extinct volcano with chestnut woods and volcanic slopes. The Monticchio Lakes lie within this radius inside the Vulture area. The Vulture regional landscape area covers the mountain and lakes. The nearest town of size is Melfi, which has services and a Norman castle. Barile is part of the Aglianico del Vulture wine area, with vineyards and cellar settlements cut into the volcanic tuff.
