The cluster lies in the Apennine interior of Basilicata (Appennino Lucano), an area of hills and lower mountains. The surrounding landscape within about 15 km is a mix of small agricultural fields, pastures and patches of woodland (oak and beech are common in this part of the region). Settlement pattern is small towns and hilltop villages with dispersed farmsteads; population density is low. The local economy is predominantly agriculture and livestock, with small-scale farming typical. The provincial capital Potenza is the nearest city of size and provides hospital, provincial services and rail connections (roughly a few dozen kilometres to the north). There are irrigation and hydroelectric reservoirs in the wider Val d'Agri area of Potenza province (the province contains at least one large artificial lake), but no single nationally famous landscape feature is certain within a 15 km radius of the cluster.
