The cluster is in the built-up area of Reggio Calabria on the Strait of Messina, with the Aspromonte massif rising inland within short distance. The area is tied to the Strait rather than an open coast, with Sicily and Mount Etna visible across the water in clear conditions. Aspromonte National Park begins inland and contains steep valleys and forested mountain terrain above the city. The nearest substantial ski area is Gambarie in Aspromonte, roughly 30 km inland and about an hour by road. Reggio Calabria is the main city of the area, with a seafront, ferry links, rail connections, the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia, and the airport. The area is known for the Strait landscape, bergamot cultivation, and the Bronzes of Riace in the city museum.
