Contrada Foresta, Caulonia

The Ionian coast is at the door here, with a long seafront and beach at Caulonia Marina. The hill village of Caulonia stands just inland above the coast, with the lower valley of the Stilaro nearby and the first slopes of the Serre calabresi rising a short distance inland. Roccella Ionica, the nearest larger centre on this stretch, has a marina, rail station and the remains of a hilltop castle. This part of the Locride is known for citrus, olive groves and the contrast between Ionian shore and inland Calabrian hills.
